Dr. Carlos Ferrer Señoráns
Specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology
I am the Medical Director of the Orthobiologic and Regenerative Medicine Unit of IMATDE ARTHROSPORT at HM Hospitals in Malaga, a multidisciplinary medical-surgical team specialized in biological medicine, muscle and tendon pathology and bone metabolism. In addition, my area of specialization, also within IMATDE ARTHROSPORT, is Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology (OTS) of the hip and knee, related to joint preservation surgical procedures (cartilage), arthroplasty (prosthesis), sports traumatology and ultrasound-guided ultra-minimally invasive surgery.
"Since I was still a child, I began to have a growing interest in the world of medicine and especially in the field of surgery. At the age of 15, I already knew how to suture wounds (I used to practice on chicken thighs) and I used to go as one of the surgical team to see trauma operations with my father".
- Dr Ferrer Señoráns
That interest became a passion, and from there to my future vocation there was only a degree in Medicine, which I studied in Malaga (University of Malaga 1994). The subjects where I excelled the most were undoubtedly those related to Anatomy and Surgery.
Training in England
Subsequently, I decided to see the world and to do my specialty in Traumatology and Orthopedic Surgery in England.
In total, I was there studying and working for more than 8 years. I was very fortunate to be able to do my academic training in this specialty, rotating through various hospitals throughout the UK. During this time, I worked as a resident physician at Maidstone General Hospital (Kent), St Helier Hospital (London), Epsom General Hospital (London) and Addenbrooke's University Hospital (Cambrigde).
I obtained the title of specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology in 2002. My last job in England was as a Trauma Fellow in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Cambridge University Hospital (Addenbrooke's Hospital).
There I spent more than two years, having the opportunity to work for internationally renowned specialists, such as Dr C Constant (world reference in shoulder surgery), Dr R Villar (precursor in Europe of hip arthroscopy) and Dr D Dandy (the "father" of arthroscopic knee surgery in Europe).
Although much of my training took place in NHS hospitals, I also collaborated in the surgical activity of my bosses in private hospitals and was a teaching assistant in surgical anatomy classes in Cambridge, under the supervision of Dr C Cosntant, to whom I will be eternally grateful for such an unforgettable experience.
Career Path
Once I had completed my academic training in my specialty, I decided to return to my homeland to continue my surgical training with what I consider to be my true teacher in this field: my father. Together with him and his team, I started working in private healthcare, as a specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology (COT). Together, many years ago, we began to take an interest in cartilage reconstruction surgery, when it was practically in its embryonic stage.
From 2002 to the present, I have attended countless training courses and congresses, sometimes as a national and international speaker.
In 2003 I joined the Instituto Malagueño de Traumatología y Medicina del Deporte (IMATDE), where I would practice as a specialist in COT in the Hip Unit for the next seven years.
From 2005 to 2016 I was part of the Hip Unit at the Ochoa Hospital in Marbella.
During this time, I also began my collaboration as a COT specialist at the AMS Exercise Medical Center in Marbella.
It was in 2009, when my partner, Dr. G. Alvarez Rey and I, created SONOSURGERY, located in the Hospital Vithas Malaga. This Unit of Ecointerventionism and Ecoassisted Surgical Techniques in the Locomotor System, arose from the need to advance in the knowledge of what was then an emerging concept: The application of local treatments and ultra-minimally invasive surgical techniques with the help of ultrasound guidance to achieve a higher level of precision. It was the first multidisciplinary unit of its kind in Malaga and from our beginnings with tests on cadaveric specimens at the University of Malaga to the present day, we have established numerous medical and surgical protocols, with presentations and lectures on our work, to specialists from all over the world.
Later, around 2012, I founded the Advanced Orthopedic Surgery Unit, in which, as Head of the Unit, I spent ten years performing everything from conventional surgical interventions such as knee and hip arthroplasties to ultra-minimally invasive chondral surgery techniques combined with cutting-edge biological therapies in the field of regenerative medicine.
Today, we continue to advance in this exciting field, where the future is already a reality. Currently, I am part of the Orthopedic Surgery Service IMATDE ARTHROSPORT of the hospitals HM Malaga, HM Internacional Santa Elena and HM El Pilar, where I am the Medical Director of the Orthobiology and Regenerative Medicine Unit, a multidisciplinary medical-surgical team specialized in biological medicine, muscle and tendon pathology and bone metabolism.
It should also be noted that for years I have been responsible for teaching courses on regenerative medicine with BMC (mesenchymal cells) for FIDIA ACADEMY in Spain.
In short, my work focuses on biological medicine and orthopedic surgery, with a special focus on minimally invasive techniques and regenerative therapies.
